The
reenactment of the Battle of Gettysburg, marking the 135th anniversary
of that American Civil War battle, took place at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania,
in July 1998.
And I was lucky enough to be there!
Here, then, are some impressions and photos of the event, as seen
by this New Zealand 'Confederate'!
I'm Roly Hermans, from Paraparaumu, New Zealand. I had the pleasure
recently of playing the part of a Confederate soldier in the 47th
Virginia Infantry at the Battle of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania, USA
(well, at least, the reenactment of the battle!).
This site is intended to give an idea of the impressions I gained during
this journey, a trip not only half-way round the world, but also 135 years
back in time!
Although I have pitched this site mainly at those who have no prior knowledge
of the hobby of Civil War reenacting, I trust that experienced reenactors
will find plenty to interest them in the many photographs of this
event which I have included.
And for lovers of model lead soldiers, I have added a page to show
off my minature Civil War army.

Civil War soldiers.
20 June 2002 - A long overdue update! I have added
a new page to this site, where you can take a look at my miniature
Civil War soldiers.
24 February 2002 - you might like to visit my other
military history and wargaming websites that I have been working
on lately - just click on these buttons:
20 January 2001 - I haven't added anything new to
this site lately. However, I have been busy on my other military
website over the last few months. This other site features
my miniature 18th century French wargames army. Why not drop
by for a look at http://dare.paradise.net.nz/france/index.htm
... see you there, 'mes amis'!

June 1999 - this photo is a sight that any member of the
47th Virginia during the real Civil War would have given his
eye-teeth for ... British troops on campaign with Confederates!
Bruce Cairns of the 65th Regiment of Foot from Auckland, New
Zealand, is shown here on guard duty with me during our recent
event in the Wairarapa. Bruce will be joining the 47th Virginia
at 'Grant vs Lee' (the battles of the Wilderness and Spotsylvania)
near Culpeper, Virginia, later this month. I won't be able
to make it to the United States this time, unfortunately.
In reply to numerous requests: the Gettysburg wording
enclosing the photo of the 47th VA on the heading of these
pages was done with the PowerClip function of CorelDraw 7.
