The
D.A.R.E. New Zealand logo incorporates our national flag, in the same
way that D.A.R.E. America uses the stars and stripes in their official
logo.
The New Zealand flag depicts
the Union Jack in the top left corner, symbolizing New Zealand's relationship
with Britain. On the blue field are four red stars, which depict the
most obvious southern hemisphere star constellation, the Southern
Cross.
Many people confuse the New Zealand
and the Australian flags (in fact, many people confuse New Zealand and
Australia - they are two totally separate countries, in the same way
as the USA and Canada are separate!). The Australian flag has six white
stars, while the New Zealand flag has four red stars bordered in white.
This flag became official when
Parliament passed the New Zealand Ensign Act of 1901 (which actually
became law in 1902).
One interesting mystery is that
New Zealand's national anthem, which you can hear playing
in the background of this page if you wish, refers to New Zealand's
"triple star" - rather odd, because our flag features four stars,
not three! No one is entirely sure what the composer meant (some
think that perhaps he was indicating that New Zealand has three
main islands - the North island, South Island and Stewart Island,
but that seems a bit obtuse to me).
